My kitchen shelves were bulging under baskets, jars, boxes of flavoured teas, takeaway menus and let’s face it, just stuff. I’ve been wanting to get them organised for so long and finally got round to it.
The result might just be one of the quickest and easiest storage updates I’ve ever done.
I emptied all the existing jars, bought a few new ones and wanted an easy way to put labels on. I’ve used Chalkboard paint a lot so wondered if it would work on your average address label sheet. I used Rust-Oleum Chalkboard spray paint and a few sheets of sticky address labels. The kind you run through your printer.
A couple of coats to make sure it was fully coated did the job and dried really quickly too. Then it was just a case of peeling and sticking. I used a chalk pen to write on they need to be wet to wipe off, whereas normal chalk would rub off when the jars were handled.
As they’re chalkboard I can have a little fun with the labelling as they can be changed really easily. I’m pretty sure we all said P’sgetti at one point in our lives!
One of our oldest friends came to stay that weekend and conveniently he has the loveliest handwriting! So I called in a favour. Thanks Andy! He’s also a freelance graphic designer in Manchester should you ever need one.
The finishing touch to my shelves was a roll of wide gold polka dot washi tape used on the front facing edges.
All in all, it took about an hour including drying times. So simple and easily updatable when you change your mind.

Love these! I’ve been shying away from chalkboard paint because I’m not a fan of the scratchy, scratchy, but I have chalk pen and can use it! My spice jars need updating and this would be a lovely way to do them. I wonder if you could spray-paint card and then run that through the cutting machine to make ornate labels…. You can spray pretty much everything with chalkboard! I say go for it and post a pic when you’re done! X

OH!!!! I paint the labels onto the jar with chalkboard paint. It alway chips. Never thought to paint labels! Great tip. #MakingHome
